John Cook

The sad news that John Cook, past Town Mayor and Chairman of the BCA, passed away at the end of last week prompted Gordon Bluck to write these words in memory of John:

“Following the recent death of John Cook I felt that he should be remembered on our new website; the development of which he would have doubtless approved. I have worked with John for nearly 20 years on BCA matters since I arrived on the main committee and subsequently joined Town Amenities Sub Committee, taking over as Chairman soon after. He was always there offering wise counsel to the “new boy” and indeed the whole of the BCA. His knowledge of the town as ex-Mayor made him a natural choice to recommend new street names to the Council. His photographic record of the High Street caused him a lot of work but is now the seminal record held at Dacorum Planning Department. Following the death of David Brunt he took on the task of producing the annual BCA Environment Award presentation which I had the honour to deliver. He was painstaking in the script and any mistakes were always mine. A thoughtful and clever man who was always excellent company and gave freely of his time to the BCA and the other organisations he was involved in.

I have not touched on his distinguished career as an Executive on the railways, here and abroad; but I am sure he would admit it was a full life. I will always remember him. All are thoughts are with Joan and their family.”
